On Killing A Tree by Gieve Patel Poetry
Q.1. Substance of the poem "On Killing a Tree".
Ans: A
surgeon-turned-environmentalist Gieve Patel deftly depicts the growth,
struggle and killing of a tree in the poem “On Killing a Tree”. A tree is very
strong and as per the poet, cutting the tree is not a simple job. It has to be
performed with utmost precision. The tree has grown steadily consuming
nutrients of the earth, feeding upon the crust, absorbing years of sunlight,
air, and water. If it is hacked and chopped, it heals its wounds naturally.
From the part close to the ground, new leaves grow and develop into its former
size. So the tree doesn’t seem to suffer any substantial pain. It overcomes all
tortures inflicted by men and struggles for existence. So the root has to be
pulled out from the anchoring earth exposing the source of security to ensure
the killing of the tree. After the uprooting process is done, the roots are
scorched, choked, browned, hardened, twisted and withered in sun and air. It
surrendered to the cruelty of man and finally the tree gets killed, awakening
our sense of spiritual values and reminding us how brutally we treat the trees
which, in reality, are our best friends.
