Q.1. Why is the marriage proposal importance to all the characters?

Ans: Anton Chekhov’s one-act play ‘The Proposal’ dwells on the dilemma of matrimony. Lomov, the main protagonist, enters Chubukov’s house with a desire of asking Natalya’s hand in marriage. Lomov has reached the critical age of thirty five and Natalya is well beyond her nuptial age. Chubukuv thinks his daughter a liability and wants her to get married soon. So, Chubukov becomes very happy when he hears the news of proposal and he is confident that Natalya will certainly accept the proposal as she is love-sick. When Natalya gets the slightest smell of marriage proposal she insists her father out of anuptaphobia to bring Lomov back. Chubukov is desperate to save his face and wants to get rid of the burden as the father of a grown-up daughter. Natalya is also desperate to be married soon. Thus marriage proposal is important to all the characters and marriage is a sigh of relief to all.

Q.2. Who was Lomov? Why was he keen to get married? Who did he think was the right choice as a wife? Why did he think so?  [1+2+1+2]

Ans: In Anton Chekhov’s one-act play “The Proposal”, Lomov is a young man of 35 and a neighbor of Chubukov.
At the age of 35, Lomov has come to a point in his life when it is not possible for him to remain a bachelor. He cannot wait for an ideal or real love. He suffers from palpitations and insomnia, so he needs somebody to support him.
He thought Natalya was the right choice as a wife.
Lomov chooses Natalya not because he has fallen in live with her, but because of a practical necessity. He thinks that Natalya is ‘an excellent housekeeper, not bad-looking, well-educated,’ so he chooses her, He has no cordial emotion for her.

Q.3. “Bring him back! Ah! Bring him here.” ̶   Who says this and to whom? Why is the speaker so excited? What is ironic about Natalya’s request to bring Lomov back?

Ans: Natalya Stepanovna says this in Chubukov’s one-act farce ‘The Proposal’. She says this to her father Chubukov.
Natalya Stepnovna, a twenty five years old maid, is stepping well beyond her nuptial age. She is not still been able to find her man. Lomov came to beg her hand in marriage, she forces her father to bring Lomov back. She doesn’t want to miss the chance of getting married. So, she is excited.
Natalya is love-sick. She is not still been able to find her though she is twenty five years old. So she does not want to miss the chance of having a life partner. The irony is that the person whom she has insulted and humiliated a great deal and even drives him out, she feels no shame to call that person back.
