"GOOD MANNERS"
“Good manners cost nothing, but buy everything” — Montague
Manners means outward behavior.
And the man who observes the etiquette of good society and behaves politely
towards others is said to have good manners. Good manners make gentleman, and a
man with good manners is liked and admired by all. Good manners include
politeness, humility, kind words and courtesy.
Good manners are a virtue. Good
manners can achieve a good result. It helps him not only to obtain friends but
also to win foes. It helps him to possess a personality. One should show marks
of respect to our superiors and elders, and to be kind even to our enemies. One
should think of the feelings, comfort and happiness of others before his own. A
good mannered person is amiable, soft and moderate.
Good manners made for social
happiness. There is enough of sorrow in this world. Wo should not seek to
increase it by unnecessary unkindness which is the essence of bed manners. On
the other hand we can lessen the sufferings of man by cultivating good manners.
Kind words will cost us nothing, but they will bring joy and comfort to the
distressed man. We can also be polite towards the peasants who labour hard from
dawn to dusk to keep the wolf from the door. This politeness brightens up their
depressed heart. Thus good manners can take away the pinch off the sufferings
of man. They have ben rightly called “surface religion”, because like true
religion they are based on unselfish sympathy.
